Jaw clenching, grinding, TMJD and how to release the pattern
Hi beautiful. I'm going to get right to the point (being mindful of our collective neck health and avoiding unnecessary tech-neck).
If you're finding yourself clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth at night - I'm here to help!
A couple of weeks ago I was waking up with painful tension headaches and so I re-started a very chill (NOT time-consuming) evening practice that fully restored me.
First off, I see jaw stuff as a beautiful teacher, and an interesting blend of:
- Tension and instability in the pelvis (your jaw and pelvis are intrinsically connected).
- Alignment issues (un-addressed hyper-mobility and instability)
- Your body seeking stability and trying to ground itself through clenching and holding patterns
- Anger, control, frustration, fear, unspoken words
There can be more involved like tongue-related things, and pallet stuff but TYPICALLY it's some combination of the list above.
So, what to do?
Soften into your pelvis, relax the muscles, clear the energy, and do some very gentle, light, friendly, inflammation-reducing massage of the jaw and temporal muscles.
This week's suggested practice inside of Embodied Beauty Collective is a gorgeous, 12-minute, night-time body opening, jaw massage sequence that you can literally do IN BED. No tools, no props, no yoga mat. just you, and I together - in bed.
Inside of EBC I've been doing this really fun thing where I drop a mini suggested weekly practice for you to try for the full week.
This way you can fully explore one ritual, shorten it or extend it, do it exactly as I explain or fully, intuitively make it your own.
