The Healing Magic of Your Tears

There’s some seriously salty healing-magic of your tears… don’t hold them back!

I cry a lot. Like more than the average person, it's the way that my body expresses and releases any kind of stress. My dad used to joke that I cried at supermarket openings…

I used to really dislike this quality in myself and try to hold them back. The tension would build in my throat so much giving me the sensation of being choked.

I’ve learned to honor my urge to cry more recently, because crying doesn’t always indicate that you’re in peril. Sometimes it's literally your body just releasing build up stress hormones!

Crying lowers your blood pressure and triggers the release of leucine-enkephalin, an endorphin that reduces pain and improves your mood. Why suppress that flow?

Now I understand crying in a board meeting isn’t something you want to do. But there are times when we suppress our tears because we’re afraid we’ll be misunderstood or even written-off as irrational or overly-emotional and not taken seriously.

Sometimes we can’t explain why the tears are happening. So I’ve even started saying to Chris (my husband) “Please, ignore the fact that I’m crying, I don’t need comfort right now, my body is just releasing as I talk about this - please listen to the words that I’m saying”

This has allowed me to let it flow and still have a calm dialogue about what it is I’m trying to express.

Do you let your tears flow? Do you suppress them? Have you been called “over sensitive before”? I’m curious about your experience with this.
