From witchcraft level potions to minimalism, how traditional “skincare” was my skin’s downfall…

I used to be the woman of many tiny bottles. I spent SO much time and money researching, purchasing, and eventually recovering from my skin-care product obsession.

I thought if I started early with the most therapeutic and potent active ingredients in high rotation, that my skin would be youthful and healthy forever.

I would try vitamin C serums, retinols, peptides, acids, natural and organic products packed with gorgeous potent plants.

This eventually brought me to massive skin barrier disruption and eventual constant painful cystic acne. I could get away with this heavy product usage in my 20s but once I hit 30 my barrier was screaming for mercy.

I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I was doing everything “right” following the rules and guidelines that promised to keep me young forever.

At this stage I decided to get help and was encouraged to use acne products which made my face hurt so badly from the sensitivity, my tears would sting like fire running down my cheeks.

I knew something was way off. It was like bringing a machine gun to a knife fight. I thought about the days where I would just slap coconut oil on my skin (gasp, I know) and my skin just thrived.

I reached out to a different acne specialist and literal angel who is a molecular biologist named Sara Sumic ~ and she explained to me how my barrier was compromised and the products (even the beautiful natural and organic ones) were causing massive inflammation.

So we stripped down the routine, got super, super, super gentle (with nothing active) and my skin started to bounce back immediately. My skin became dewy, calm, strong and resilient.

So my skin care is plain as hell… but I don’t have any fear around it, or worry that I’m not doing enough, because what I’ve learned over the past five years is that the healing, renewing, regenerating beauty magic happens BENEATH the skin. Skin is fed from the bottom up. My beauty secret is blood flow, Qi flow, collagen and elastin production and a clear, clean healthy cell bath of happy interstitial fluid.

My skin care keeps getting cheaper, and cheaper, and cheaper… I am a true minimalist with 5 items on my bathroom countertop. Gentle cleanser, thermal water, a light oil, and a thicker shea butter, and some mineral spf for sunny days. And of course my gua sha tools are near by.
